volunteering with special olympics - sunshine coast
Our Association is always actively recruiting for new volunteers - whether as coaches, assistant coaches, program volunteers, or simply general volunteers.
Volunteering with Special Olympics is an opportunity for you to make a direct impact on the quality of life of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and to make a meaningful contribution here on the Sunshine Coast.
As a Special Olympics volunteer, you will bring enthusiasm, commitment and a positive attitude to each practice, event and competition, thereby enriching the lives of the athletes you meet. In return, you develop relationships with athletes who inspire you with their dedication, perseverance and courage. You will learn new skills, meet new people and gain unique experiences, enriching your own life in return.

what do I need to do to become a volunteer?
1. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator. She will speak with you about the many opportunities within Special Olympics and will provide you with a volunteer registration package.
2. Come on out and attend a practice in the sport of your choice to get a feel for the organization, the athletes and the various opportunities available. The Head Coach will answer some of your questions and can arrange to get a volunteer registration package to you.
3. Once you are registered, you may officially take part in our programming. We register all our volunteers with the Special Olympics Provincial Office to ensure that you receive up-to-date communication and access to training opportunities, as well as fulfilling our liability requirements.
4. We require all our volunteers to complete a Criminal Record Check every 5 years. This must be completed prior to officially volunteering.
5. All new volunteers must take the online Orientation course. This interactive online orientation course will offer a thorough and interesting introduction to the world of Special Olympics, enhancing your ability to coach and support the SOBC athletes on the Sunshine Coast and help them enrich their lives through sport. It is recommended that this online orientation course be completed within 30 days of registering with Special Olympics.

nccp - the national coach certification program
This program provides a systematic method by which coaches may improve their coaching skills.
Special Olympics BC requires that all coaches complete the training within their first year of coaching. This ensures that coaches are prepared for their tasks and all athletes are provided with similar learning opportunities.
On occasion, the NCCP Part A course will be made available through classroom learning (held on the lower mainland). This two-day course is usually held on a weekend.
As an alternative, the NCCP Part A Home Study Program is designed for those coaches unable to attend a course off coast. Upon registering, the hard copy Reference Material will be mailed to the coach (arrives within 7 business days). The Reference Material will include an Introduction letter that will provide the name and contact information for an NCCP Learning Facilitator (tutor) and a link to the electronic online Coach Workbook. The coach will then complete the workbook within 3 months and submit it to an NCCP Learning Facilitator (tutor) to be marked. The NCCP Learning Facilitator (tutor) will also be available should you have any questions throughout the course
If you are interested in registering for either the NCCP Home Study Program or the NCCP Part A classroom component, please contact us for further details.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS COMPETITION WORKSHOP
This course is specific to coaches of athletes with an intellectual disability. It is organized and offered by Special Olympics British Columbia. All coaches are required to complete this training within their first year of coaching. The course is generally held on the Lower Mainland on weekends.
