What a whirlwind of activity for Special O these past few weeks.
As sports programs wound down for the spring/summer season, Softball athletes and fans were treated to a final header between the Ravens vs the Ball Busters Women’s team. The plays as always were dynamite on both sides, lots of smiles and gorgeous weather. The fans cheers could be heard from blocks away. The score (although not really tabulated) was 9-8 for the Ball Busters but our Ravens gave ’em a run for their money!
Soccer was also on the agenda, with coaches & parents vs the athletes. Lovely weather and excellent playing again and this time the athletes came out on top. We even celebrated Derick Pye’s birthday followed by pizza and signing of the team photo - one for each athlete and coach.
Head soccer coach Richard Hoath explained how well the match was played with everyone putting in their full effort and the fair calls that were made. Athletes Kyle VanderHeide and Amber Maher both had a lot of fun and enjoyed competing. They are already anticipating next year’s games!
Athlete Peer Mentor Derick Pye recounted the excellent amount of passing the ball and summed up this year as lots of fun with everyone coming together to enjoy the sport.
Track & Field had a quiet final practice in the blazing sun, with athletes running 4 - 50 metre races with gentle warm up and cool down fitness activities in the shade. After final stretches, we socialized over Timbits. Coach Tania Finnigan remarked that everyone has improved over the season and definitely found their ‘footing’ in this power packed sport.
July 1st SOSC once again hosted a table in Hackett Park for Canada Day. Although blustery, no rain and the sun shone. The park was packed to the gills with vendors and through traffic counted in the hundreds. Special O’s booth was neighbours to the Naval Cadets, terrific buddies who took the time to chat and interact. Folks were happy to take a pamphlet, learn about SO, and leave with goodies in hand. Thanks to Athletes Brandon, Amanda & Summer for showing up to support us. Amanda stayed a bit to answer questions and describe her experiences with Special O to one very interested visitor. A huge thank you to John Byrne from The Farm, and Organizer of the event, for lending and setting up a tent, and for his kindness despite his immense responsibility. John, makes S.O. feel welcomed, accepted and included. Another tremendous thank you to Terri Kleij, from SCACL who loaned and personally delivered her own table for us to use and for the loan of two lovely red tablecloths from SCACL that were extremely useful.
Best wishes to our Orca Swimmers as they compete at the National Games in Medicine Hat in August and with that, I bid my readers adieu.
